Feira de Ipanema
|Considered to be the largest open-air art gallery and crafts market in the world, the Feira de Ipanema is a neighborhood classic. Created in 1968, a controversial period, the market is also known as the Feira Hippie (Hippie Market) and takes place every Sunday from 8 am to 8 pm, rain or shine, at Praça General Osório.
This is an ideal place to discover Rio’s local craftwork and meet the artists personally, as they usually hang out by their stalls.
Food here is amazing, specially the delicious tapioca with cheese and coconut, or the Acarajé bean cake from the Barraca da Bahiana stall located at the southeastern-most point of the square, near the corner of Jangadeiros and Prudente de Morais streets. Leave room for the sensational sweets. We recommend the Punhetinha de Estudante (literally, the “little student handjob”), a sweet dessert made on the grill. Address: Praça General Osório, Ipanema
